METROPOLITAN, MUNICIPAL, AND DISTRICT CHIEF EXECUTIVES VETTING, SO FAR, SO VERY GOOD

A big thank you to H.E., President of the republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, Vice President, H.E Alhaji Dr. Mamudu Bawumia, the Chief of Staff, Hon. Frema Osei Opare, the indefatigable Minister for Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD), the Hon. Dan Kwaku Botwe as well as the regional vetting committees across the sixteen (16) regions of the country for a successful first phase of the vetting of aspirants vying for the slot.

Available data gathered throughout the country points to a largely calm process in spite of the huge number of aspirants. In 2017, the process became chaotic when there were only ten regions with much less numbers of aspirants. This bred acrimony and precipitated disenchantment amongst the party people resulting in internal power clashes admittedly. The governing party suffered backlashes negatively affecting its fortunes at the December polls.

Local government administration has a great role to play in post pandemic economic reorganization towards helping the ordinary citizen find hope, financial and economic inclusion and supporting the state to advance its rapid transformation. This explains impetus, why the process is expected to proceed conscientiously in a manner that will lead to the selection of men and women who are prepared, and are focused on the priority of H.E. the President deliver on its mandate to the Ghanaian people.

Across the country, there were adverse reports against some few MMDCEs who became self-conceited and acted in ways that disunited the party’s people. They paid no regard to the grassroots support base, and showed outright incompetence.

However, many of them kept faith and served well in their communities, district, region, municipal and metropolitan.

All that said, we are awaiting the commencement of the final lap of the process. It’s our view that, the youth and diasporans are given the opportunity so as to put their expertise and youthful exuberance to bear on the process of local government administration and to help the government roll out its policies and programs to the benefit of our society.

Perforce, H.E. the President, our affable and hardworking minister, Hon Dan Botwe as well as the party deserve our commendation for the effective modalities put up to guide a smoother vetting process ensuring transparency.

That transparency it is hope will guide the phase two and its finality. There should be no room for anyone to stampede the process by any overbearing overtures. All of us have a responsibility to engender confidence, propriety and trust however our interests. The larger collective interest must be seen to be served across the board.

We have begun well, let’s finish well to consolidate our fortunes now and into the foreseen future.

Congratulations Minister, et al.

EMMANUEL ATTAFUAH-DANSO,
